The Environmental Fund has launched E-Lar, the program that succeeds the former "Edifícios + Sustentáveis." This initiative supports Portuguese citizens in replacing gas appliances with more efficient electric appliances (class A or higher), promoting 100% electric homes and reducing energy consumption.
What is the E-Lar Program?
E-Lar aims to support the energy transition of Portuguese homes—from dependence on gas to efficient electric solutions. The program combats energy poverty, improves thermal comfort, and contributes to national decarbonization goals.
Who is it for?
Support is available to all households with an active electricity contract, divided into three groups:
- Group I: Residents in "More Sustainable Neighborhoods"
- Group II: Households with a social electricity rate
- Group III: Other households with an electricity contract
Groups I and II receive up to €1,683 per household (including installation), while Group III receives up to €1,100 (equipment only).
What equipment is covered?
The support applies exclusively to the replacement of the following equipment, all of which must be energy class A or higher:
- Electric cooktops
- Electric ovens
- Electric water heaters (storage heaters)
Unlike previous programs, refrigerators and washing machines are excluded from E-Lar.
How does the support work?
Approved applicants receive digital vouchers valid for 60 days, redeemable at participating retailers. Suppliers handle billing and receive direct reimbursement from the Environmental Fund. Installation of the new equipment and disposal of the old equipment for recycling must occur within 30 days.
How do I apply?
Applications are submitted online through the Environmental Fund portal. Required documents:
- Tax ID and IBAN of the account holder
- Proof of address
- For Groups I and II: eligibility documentation (tax returns, proof of social benefit)
Inspection
Suppliers must photograph the facilities and confirm the recycling of old equipment. The Environmental Fund conducts random on-site inspections to verify compliance with the program’s conditions.

The program offers immediate financial relief through direct discounts at the point of sale, reducing initial costs while lowering monthly energy expenses. For families that still rely on gas appliances for cooking and water heating, E-Lar represents a concrete opportunity for transition without the burden of the full investment.
